Dad, the Rock Star of Tamale-makers
By Kathy Cano Murillo
other wise known as the Crafty Chica

And the BEST BESTEST story in the whole
Chicken Soup for the Latino Soul

With the power of a glue gun Kathy Cano Murillo
will make everything shine with glitter!
Who knew she had the same talent with words!
This story comes alive with her witty remarks,
colorful details and a strong, love and respect for her DAD.

The Crafty Chica says to La Diva;
Well, since I wrote the story, my Dad is still making
his tamales, but now he gladly accepts help from all of us!
He is 71 and appreciates the extra hands.
But we don't dare stray from his directions,
he is there to watch every move!!!
And thank goodness, he is always in a good mood,
which means they are not too hot to eat!!!

You MUST read this story now because after all-
this is tamale making season!

A Heros’ Story by Monica Garcia Saenz
This story has a lot of layers.  Quite interesting!  I mean  there is sadness and triumph all in one.
Makes me wonder about those moments that can change your life forever!
Sometimes life and death situations – sometimes ur life and ur death.
Or should I say someone else’s.  That’s why he’s a hero.
There’s a day named after him- Primitivo “Tivo” Garcia.  For his bravery and his ultimate sacrifice.
No he was not in a war or anything.  But he was definitely a hero in every sense of the word.

Monica Garcia Saenz says to La Diva :
Have you read THE SECRET? Or studied the Law of Attraction?  I just called it GANAS.
One day I decided to see if I really had what it took to publish
or I was just going to stop calling myself a writer.
The following week I got an email with a LAST CALL FOR STORIES
for the Chicken Soup for the Latino Soul book.

I never for a moment doubted that my story would be chosen.
I never considered the odds, never imagined a rejection letter and failure was just not an option.
I felt this unwavering faith coming from deep inside of me
I knew that Tivo’s story just had to be told and that our people were in desperate need of a hero.
I even told people that it was chosen before I actually got the good news.
I had no idea what excuse I was going to have to give if it wasn’t chosen…
because in my mind it just wasn’t an option.

She also shared with La Diva that she is working on a full-length book
and perhaps even a movie. Can't wait!

The Cuban Kitchen Dance by Johnny Diaz

This story reads like a well choreographed two-step
between a loving mom and her not-so-willing
dance partner – her son.
It is a super sweet story that anyone
who dances and sings as they clean can relate to!

Johnny Diaz says to La Diva:
I wrote the "Cuban Kitchen Dance" as a tribute to my mom,
who always dances in the kitchen while preparing food or
talking on the phone. I thought that other Latinos might relate
to the story and find a connection within their own family
whether they were a daughter dancing with their father or a son
with his mom.  The story represents one of those universal
scenes we've all had with a parent or loved one.

My mom was very happy about the story - it tickled her. And of
course, she still pulls me onto her kitchen-dance floor
whenever I visit home.
